Hello Parents!
This past week we began a novel study. To prepare for the reading of Number the Stars by Lois Lowry, we looked at Nazi-occupied Denmark during World War II, along with some related vocabulary activities. You may wish to ask your child what they have learned about the historical backdrop of this novel. The students will be reading the novel at home and will be given a short online quiz for each pair of chapters. We have read the first two chapters in class. The reading schedule for Number the Stars is as follows:
January 16-30
Wednesday and Thursday night: Chapters 3 and 4
Friday through Tuesday night: Chapters 5 and 6
Wednesday night: Chapters 7 and 8
Thursday night: Chapters 9 and 10
Friday through Sunday night: Chapters 11 and 12
Monday night: Chapters 13 and 14
Tuesday night: Chapters 15 and 16
Wednesday night: Chapter 17 and Afterword
The students may read ahead if they choose.
Students are continuing to collect story ideas in their Writer's Journal.
We also have a math test coming up on Monday. Please see the details below. Any students having difficulty with any of the mathematical concepts are encouraged to seek help. I am available after school from 2:30-3:15.
