Forsyth Road News and Assignments
Dear Parents and Adults at Home,
We are beginning a mathematics unit on measurement. The students will explore the relationship among the side lengths, the perimeter and the area of a rectangle. They will develop formulas for perimeter of a rectangle, a parellelogram, and a regular polygon. They will also develop a formula for the area of a rectangle.
In this unit, your child will:
Develop and use rules to find the perimeters of polygons.
Develop and use rules to find the area of a rectangle.
Design and draw a rectangle, given its perimeter of area.
Here is an activity you can do at home:
Have your child measure the perimeter of a variety of different figures. For example, your child can find the perimeter of the cover of a book, the top of the kitchen table, and so on. Ask your child to record the perimeter using more than one metric unit (for example, centimetres and metres).
Please see further details below. Any students having difficulty with any of the mathematical concepts are encouraged to seek help. I am available after school from 2:30-3:15.
Week Two: Number the Stars by Lois Lowry. Our in-class discussions have been interesting. The students are starting to get the hang of the blogging component.
The reading schedule for Number the Stars is as follows:
January 24-30
Thursday night: Chapters 9 and 10
Friday through Sunday night: Chapters 11 and 12
Monday night: Chapters 13 and 14
Tuesday night: Chapters 15 and 16
Wednesday night: Chapter 17 and Afterword
The students may read ahead if they choose.
Students are continuing to collect story ideas in their Writer's Journal.
In Social Studies, we began a short unit investigating the culture of Japan. When it comes to culture, it is almost the opposite of Canada. Instead of many cultures, Japanese people have one strong cultural tradition that is hundreds of years old.

Christmas 2007
On Christmas Day my brothers went to the christmas tree to open the presents. When my little brother just opened his present he got a Bat-Man Backpack. He said that he didn’t like it at all because he’s 9 years old and he is not a fan of Bat-Man. When we were opening our presents, John wasn’t interested at opening presents at Christmas Day, he was more interested on the computer. He told me to open it for him so I did, it was a little white board. My mom got a purse my dad got a box of wine glasses, and I got a zip zap. My cousin called us to have a christmas dinner with them. My other cousins were there too, and my cousin’s aunt. We played til the dinner was ready. My cousin Matthew has a PS2 so we played boxing for 20 minutes. My cousin’s mom called us to come and eat. There was a table for kids and a table for adults. When we are done we open te other presents then we went home.

Christmas 2007
During Winter Break Ihad lots of fun but most of it was going outside and at the mall. My Christmas was happy and fun. I got a lot of presents but sometimes I just really need one that wraps everything up. The presents I got for Christmas were two T-shirts, two board games, and an angel musical thing that sings Amazing Grace and it flows water. My mom’s birthday was on the 4th of January and we just ate at a buffet. At the new year we didn’t really have the noisy thing for birthday parties and we didn’t see fireworks either. I really missed writing on paper at this school and I forget to write 2008, I put 2007. I missed doing homework too. I go on the computer a lot of times so I went to youtube and there was videos of this filipino girl named Charice Pempengco. On the night of Christmas we went to a Christmas party, usually my dad’s friend’s house. On Christmas Eve we invited my friend and her family in for dinner and the food my mom cooked was delicious. My Christmas 2007 started with a happy Winter Break and then it ended with a happy

Christmas ‘07
On my Winter Break I had a lot of fun. Christmas shopping was fun because it was fun to choose things for a person’s present. Sometimes, when we went shopping I would get distracted by something, (usually books,) and I would get lost. At Christmas time my family does a tradition with our cousins. Our tradition is that we go on Christmas Eve to my one of my second cousins house to celebrate my 4th oldest cousin who is at the house’s birthday. When almost every one in families is there we eat the food. It usually consists of turkey, ham, mashed potatoes, soup, and cake. When we finish eating my cousins, sisters, and me go downstairs to play games. (By the way most of my cousins are older than me by 7-12 years.) This year we played with the Wii. When it was 12 we went upstairs and opened presents. This year I got two DVDs, one PC game, a lot of clothes, a homemade globe, a backpack, and other things. We stayed at my cousin’s house until 3 am. On New Years Eve we went to my cousin’s house again. It was almost the same except without the turkey, ham, mashed potatoes, and a lot less people. We ate shrimp, lettuce wraps, chicken, and soup. We stayed downstairs to watch High School Musical 2 Extended Version. and Bridge to Terabithia. We stayed downstairs until 11:55. When it was 12 we watched the fireworks on TV. For a few seconds the fireworks had “technical difficulties.” At 2:30 am we went home. On Jan. 5 we went to my other cousins house. We ate spaghetti, sinigang, cheese cake, and garlic bread. After eating we played with a Wii. (This house also had a Wii.) It was fun to play boxing with my sister. (She lost!) Later on we watched videos on You Tube on the Wii. Most of videos are children who are great at singing, for example Charice Pempengco. At around 12 we went home.

Christmas 2007
Over my winter break I had fun. I slept in and I went to sleep over at my cousins house. On christmas I didn't do much because I don't celebrate christmas. My mom made some food, we invited people over and we had presents. It was still fun. I got money, toys and clothes. On new years I stayed up till three. Our neighbors were doing fireworks and they told us to join them , so we did. HAPPY NEW YEARS!!!!! Also on my winter break I went to lots of places like, the mall, park, peoples houses, weddings and much more. The wedding was really fun , all my cousins came and there was this game where you have to hide the groom’s shoes. And if he cant find them he can’t go home . But he found them and all the people who helped him got ten dollars. I was one of those people who helped so I got ten dollars. I had fun over my winter break.
